New York Overtakes San Francisco in Tech Talent Headcount

Banks' rapid hiring of AI specialists is changing where tech workers are based.

Overview

  • CBRE’s Scoring Tech Talent 2026 shows New York Metro now has the largest tech-talent workforce by headcount with about 394,300 workers, while the San Francisco Bay Area has about 375,730.
  • AI-skilled roles expanded sharply across the U.S. and Canada, rising 45% year over year to roughly 751,000 workers, and helped drive hiring outside traditional tech firms.
  • Financial services, insurance and real estate added about 90,530 tech jobs since 2022 while the high-tech sector shed roughly 21,262 positions, shifting where tech work is employed.
  • Major banks including JPMorgan, Citi, Wells Fargo and Bank of America are publicly hiring AI specialists to put models into production and report measurable efficiency gains.
  • Despite New York’s headcount lead, the Bay Area remains top in CBRE’s 13-metric ranking because of higher talent concentration, wages and AI-job density, and the shift could alter office demand and local labor and housing markets.
