New York Mandates K–12 Personal Finance and Climate Education, Sets Phased Rollout

The policy advances the NY Inspires Plan to prepare students for life with local flexibility over how lessons are delivered.

Overview

  • Personal finance instruction becomes required in grades 5–12 in 2026–27 and in grades K–4 in 2027–28.
  • Climate education becomes required in grades 5–12 in 2027–28 and in grades K–4 in 2028–29.
  • Finance topics will include budgeting and money management, saving and investing, credit and debit management, and earning income.
  • Climate coursework will address the causes and impacts of climate change as outlined by the Board of Regents.
  • Districts may embed content in existing subjects, create standalone courses, or incorporate finance through Career and Technical Education as part of phase two of the NY Inspires Plan.
