New York Imposes Two-Week Statewide Burn Ban as Wildfire Risk Rises

Dry, windy conditions with drought watches prompted the precaution, officials say.

Overview

  • The temporary ban runs from Oct. 2 through Oct. 15, with conditions to be reassessed afterward.
  • The order prohibits most outdoor burning, including brush fires, uncontained campfires and open cooking fires.
  • Small, contained cooking fires and backyard fire pits within size limits remain permitted, and garbage or leaf burning is still banned year-round.
  • Fire danger is rated high in the Southern Tier, Adirondacks and Lake Ontario Plains, with moderate risk across the rest of the state, according to the DEC.
  • State forest rangers have responded to about 64 wildland fires since August, and officials are urging fire prevention and water conservation.
