New York City to Add Seating at 8,750 Bus Stops in $40 Million Plan

DOT will begin installations in November, rolling out about 875 benches or leaning bars each year for a decade.

Overview

  • All targeted locations are bus stops on public property with sufficient sidewalk or island space, totaling roughly 8,750 eligible sites.
  • New fixtures will be benches or leaning bars added at stops that currently lack seating, with DOT also maintaining existing installations.
  • City data indicate nearly two-thirds of eligible stops do not have seating, even as more than 5,000 bus stops citywide already offer a place to sit.
  • New York City has over 15,000 bus stops, but only a little more than half qualify for the program due to space and property constraints.
  • Transit advocates, including the Riders Alliance and UP-STAND, praised the move as a safety and accessibility upgrade for seniors, disabled riders and families, who are among the 1.4 million daily bus users.
