New York City Secures $1 Billion for Full Rebuild of Coney Island’s Riegelmann Boardwalk

An EDC request for proposals is expected early next year, signaling that design has not yet begun.

Overview

  • The overhaul is planned as a complete reconstruction from piles to topside, replacing structural supports, decking and utilities in partnership between NYC Parks and the EDC.
  • Plans call for upgraded beach access with new ramps and plazas and renovations to more than a dozen Parks buildings used for lifeguards and public restrooms.
  • Parks officials outlined flood-resilience options that could raise sections of the walkway and create upper and lower tiers connected by steps or ramps up to about 30 inches.
  • Work will be delivered in phases over multiple years to keep the beach accessible, with community input sessions anticipated in about two years, according to Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Marty Maher.
  • Pre-design materials show a largely 80-foot-wide walkway from West 37th Street to Brighton 15th Street, with capital funding earmarked through 2032 and local leaders crediting Mayor Eric Adams and Council Member Justin Brannan for securing the money.
