Overview

  • The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the remains of Ryan Fitzgerald, Barbara Keating and an adult woman whose family requested confidentiality as the 1,651st, 1,652nd and 1,653rd victims of the World Trade Center attacks.
  • Advanced DNA techniques—including next-generation sequencing—and sustained outreach for new family reference samples enabled these latest identifications from remains recovered in 2001 and 2002.
  • These are the first new World Trade Center victim identifications since January 2024, underscoring the incremental pace of the long-running forensic effort.
  • With these additions, 1,653 of the 2,753 people killed at the World Trade Center have been identified, leaving roughly 1,100 victims still unnamed.
  • Mayor Eric Adams and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason Graham reiterated their commitment to continue DNA testing and family engagement until all remaining victims are identified.
