New York City Confirms First West Nile Cases of 2025 as Mosquito Activity Rises in U.S.

Health departments are launching targeted spraying in response to rising positive mosquito pools during the late‑summer peak.

Overview

  • New York City reported two human infections in Queens, with one patient hospitalized for encephalitis and another discharged, and officials noted virus detections in two blood donors and two possible cases under investigation in Brooklyn.
  • City surveillance has logged 988 positive mosquito pools across all five boroughs as of Aug. 22, and pesticide spraying is scheduled Aug. 25–27 in parts of the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island.
  • Kansas health officials are monitoring six cases statewide as of Aug. 15, five classified as neuroinvasive, with totals below 2023 and a KDHE dashboard updating weekly through the season.
  • In Naperville, Illinois, two traps tested positive and crews sprayed nearby areas, treated catch basins and plan additional spraying around the Last Fling Festival on Aug. 29.
  • Chatham County, Georgia, confirmed a second West Nile–positive trap in midtown Savannah on Aug. 20, and local mosquito control is continuing larviciding and catch‑basin treatments during peak transmission months.
