New York Begins Mailing Inflation Refund Checks to 8.2 Million Households

The state is returning surplus sales-tax revenue through automatic payments tied to 2023 returns.

Overview

  • Checks started mailing Sept. 26 and will arrive in batches through October and November.
  • Amounts are tiered by filing status and income: $400 or $300 for joint filers up to $300,000, and $200 or $150 for single filers up to $150,000.
  • Eligible taxpayers who filed a 2023 Form IT-201 and were not claimed as dependents will receive payments automatically.
  • All payments are sent as paper checks rather than direct deposit, and delivery timing is not tied to ZIP codes or regions.
  • The rollout includes about 3.53 million recipients in New York City and 1.25 million on Long Island.
