Police on Long Island say an officer shot and killed a man who tried to stab someone already being treated for a neck wound.

  • Officers responded at 8:38 a.m. Sunday to a 911 report of a disturbance with a weapon behind 2505 Middle Country Road in Centereach.
  • A 44-year-old man with a neck wound was receiving life-saving aid when Emilson Yoan Ordonez-Vanegaz emerged from nearby woods carrying a 10- to 12-inch knife.
  • A Suffolk County officer opened fire as Ordonez-Vanegaz lunged toward the wounded victim, striking him and prompting his transport to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
  • The stabbing victim remains hospitalized in stable condition following emergency treatment.
  • Investigators from the Suffolk Police Homicide Squad, Internal Affairs and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are conducting a joint review of the officer-involved shooting.
