New York Adult Survivors Act Set to Expire, Over 2,700 Claims Filed

Victims of sexual abuse continue to have legal recourse under the Gender Motivated Violence Act until 2025.

The New York Adult Survivors Act, which allowed victims of sexual abuse to file lawsuits regardless of when the abuse occurred, is set to expire at midnight on Thursday, November 23, 2023.
Approximately 2,700 claims have been filed under the Act, including high-profile suits against Donald Trump, Bill Cosby, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Many of the claims were filed against government entities, hospitals, churches, and schools, revealing systemic abuse in these institutions.
Despite the expiration of the Act, victims can still file sexual abuse claims under the New York City’s Gender Motivated Violence Act until March 2025.
Lawyers representing sexual abuse survivors are advocating for the reopening of the look-back window, arguing that the one-year period was too short for victims to recover and take legal action.
