New Year’s Storm Launches Multi-Day Rain and Sierra Snow Across California

Soils left saturated by last week’s storm leave the state vulnerable to flooding and debris flows through early next week.

Overview

  • Steady rain is falling on New Year’s Day with heavier bands across Southern California this morning, as flood watches, coastal flood advisories and wind alerts are in effect.
  • Officials issued evacuation warnings for the Ventura Beach RV Resort and for Los Angeles County burn-scar areas near the greater Wrightwood area, with no evacuation order for Wrightwood proper.
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom directed Cal OES to pre-position rescue resources, including swift-water teams, and San Diego activated its inclement-weather shelter program.
  • Forecasts call for roughly 2 to 3 inches of rain in major cities through Tuesday, higher in foothills and mountains, and 3 to 4 feet of Sierra snowfall that will make mountain travel hazardous.
  • After a brief lull Friday, a stronger front Friday night into Saturday is expected to bring atmospheric-river-like moisture, gusts up to 40–50 mph along parts of the coast and hills, additional rounds Sunday and Monday–Tuesday, and heightened coastal flooding risk during king tides through Sunday.
