New Year’s Eve Outage Cuts Power to 3,600 in San Francisco’s Richmond

PG&E says crews are assessing equipment damage to develop a restoration plan.

Overview

  • Power went out around 2 p.m. for about 3,600 customers in the Richmond District, with PG&E notifications showing at least 4,162 affected at one point.
  • The utility called the shutdown unplanned, said the cause is under investigation, and updated its estimated restoration time from 7:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday’s failure is at least the third outage in the neighborhood since Dec. 20, when a substation fire led to a massive citywide blackout.
  • Recent disruptions included more than 6,000 customers losing power on Dec. 27 in the Richmond and Sunset and about 11,000 out overnight on Sunday after an equipment issue in Richmond.
  • Mounting frustration has renewed calls from local leaders to accelerate San Francisco’s push to take over the city’s electric infrastructure from PG&E.
