New Year’s Eve Attacks Target Trams in Mannheim and Dresden

Police highlight a low six-figure damage tally in Mannheim, with suspects in Dresden still unidentified.

Overview

  • In Mannheim, about 20 youths hurled stones and firecrackers at three trams, shattering multiple windows and an entrance door, and completely deglazing a driver’s cabin.
  • Police said the Mannheim group also damaged a tram stop and smashed windows at a Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar staff room and a youth center.
  • One person was detained in Mannheim, with investigators pursuing a breach-of-the-peace case and estimating total losses in the low six-figure range.
  • In Dresden’s Neustadt, roughly 50 masked people erected and ignited a barricade made from bins and a sofa before pelting a passing tram with stones and defacing it with graffiti.
  • The Dresden attackers also damaged a parked car and painted a house façade, then escaped undetected as police appealed for public tips and noted the damage total remains unclear.
