Overview
- Aldi will close all UK stores on New Year’s Day after operating 8am–6pm on New Year’s Eve, with reopening on 2 January and Specialbuys staggered on 28 December, 2 January and 4 January.
- Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s plan to open on 1 January with shorter hours, including typical guidance of Tesco Extras/Superstores 9am–6pm and Express 8am–10pm, Asda and Morrisons 9am–6pm, and Sainsbury’s supermarkets 8am–8pm.
- Most M&S stores will be closed on New Year’s Day, and Lidl branches outside the M25 will also be shut, while many Lidl stores inside the M25 are scheduled to open roughly 10am–6pm.
- Waitrose, Co‑op and Iceland are set to trade on 1 January with reduced hours, though some Waitrose locations may close entirely depending on local decisions.
- New Year’s Eve brings earlier closes across chains—commonly Tesco 6am–7pm, Asda and Morrisons 7am–7pm, Lidl 8am–6pm and Sainsbury’s larger stores around 10am–7pm—so shoppers are urged to confirm local times via store finders.
