New Year Liquor Sales Soar in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

Regulatory changes boosted availability, translating into higher excise revenue.

Overview

  • Telangana recorded nearly Rs 1,350 crore in liquor sales from December 25 onwards, including about Rs 980 crore over December 29–31.
  • Daily sales in Telangana reached roughly Rs 280 crore on December 29, Rs 380 crore on December 30, and Rs 315 crore on December 31, with 8.30 lakh liquor cases and 7.78 lakh beer cases sold in those three days.
  • Telangana’s excise officials said December revenue touched about Rs 5,100 crore versus an initial projection of around Rs 4,500 crore, citing wider availability after new licences took effect on December 1 for 3,620 retail outlets and 1,100 bars, clubs and hotels.
  • Andhra Pradesh reported Rs 2,767 crore in liquor sales for December, up nearly 8% year on year, with the final three days contributing around Rs 543 crore compared with about Rs 336 crore a year earlier.
  • AP extended retail sales to midnight and permitted certain bars to serve until 1 a.m. for New Year, with officials noting continued strong demand on January 1 and digital payments narrowly overtaking cash in Visakhapatnam on December 31.
