New Year Holiday Hours Set Across Public Services, Transit and Major Retailers

Authorities urge people to plan ahead because schedules differ by city and operator, with some exceptions such as Walmart Mexico keeping normal hours.

Overview

  • Mexico City’s Metro will run 05:00–23:00 on Dec. 31 (last departures 22:30) and 07:00–24:00 on Jan. 1 under a holiday timetable, with bicycles allowed on Jan. 1.
  • Peru’s Supreme Decree No. 042-2025-PCM confirms no extended break from Dec. 29–31, makes Jan. 1 a national holiday, and declares Jan. 2 a non-working day for the public sector.
  • Peru’s ATU set special hours: the Metropolitano’s regular services A, B and C operate roughly 05:00–22:00 on Dec. 31 (feeders to 23:00), and Línea 1 runs 05:00–22:00 on Dec. 31 and 05:30–22:00 on Jan. 1 with adjusted frequencies.
  • Buenos Aires announced restricted services: subte and Premetro operate 06:00–22:00 on Dec. 31 and 08:00–22:00 on Jan. 1, night-of-Dec. 31 waste collection is suspended, and most municipal offices remain closed with hospital emergency guards active.
  • Retail and banking hours tighten widely: major Peruvian supermarkets shorten Dec. 31 hours and many close Jan. 1; banks such as BCP, BBVA, Scotiabank and Interbank operate reduced hours on Dec. 31 and close Jan. 1; in Spain, big chains close early on Dec. 31 and largely shut on Jan. 1; in the U.S., Walmart opens both days while Costco and Sam’s Club close on Jan. 1.
