Overview
- WREG says it is reviewing additional body-camera video that captures deputies removing a handgun from a man inside the courthouse who said he was Tami Sawyer’s private security and a law enforcement officer from Benton County, Mississippi.
- That man told deputies he believed he could carry because a sheriff’s official knew he was present, after which Sawyer later confronted deputies on the courthouse steps.
- Earlier clips shared by state Sen. Brent Taylor show Sawyer shouting at deputies, and Taylor alleges she tried to facilitate getting a firearm into the courthouse for private security.
- Sawyer posted that she hired security due to death threats, asserted she followed county rules, said she notified the county mayor, county attorney and sheriff, and denied any attempt to smuggle a gun.
- The Shelby County GOP called for her resignation or a recall, Rep. John Gillispie joined the criticism, the Sheriff’s Office said it is looking into the incident, and Sawyer has indicated she will issue a statement.
