New Strain of Swine Flu Detected in Human in UK for First Time

The patient has fully recovered, and the UK Health Security Agency is investigating the origin of the infection.

  • The first human case of a new strain of swine flu, Influenza A H1N2v, has been detected in the UK, marking the first time this strain has been found in humans in the country.
  • The patient, from North Yorkshire, had a mild illness and has fully recovered. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating how the individual acquired the infection.
  • Since 2005, 50 human cases of H1N2v have been reported globally, but the UK case is genetically unique from these previous cases.
  • Swine flu, a respiratory illness of pigs caused by type A flu viruses, occasionally infects humans. The viruses typically circulate in animal populations and only sporadically infect humans.
  • Health authorities in the UK are following up with close contacts of the confirmed case and advising on necessary actions.
