New ‘Slop Evader’ Extension Lets Users Filter Searches to the Pre-ChatGPT Web

The open-source tool applies Google’s date filter to steer queries away from recent generative-AI content.

Overview

  • Created by artist and engineer Tega Brain, Slop Evader is now available for Chrome and Firefox with source code on GitHub.
  • It works by adding Google’s tbs=cdr date-range parameter to restrict results to pages from before November 30, 2022.
  • Preset options target Google searches across Reddit, Quora, Stack Exchange, Mumsnet, Pinterest, and YouTube.
  • All results still route through Google, so ranking remains under Google’s algorithms and some AI-generated material may persist.
  • The developer presents it as a convenience and a symbolic refusal of AI slop, with clear trade-offs because it cannot surface information from after 2022; coverage also notes wider concerns about degraded search quality since ChatGPT’s debut and a recent MIT Media Lab study on potential cognitive effects of LLM use.
