New Rankings Name CrossCountry UK’s Worst for Train Cancellations in 2025

ORR-based analysis to September 30 shows wide variation in reliability, with several operators under 2% cancellations against a 3.43% national average.

  • Locals Insider’s review of Office of Rail and Road data finds CrossCountry canceled 9.54% of services in 2025, the highest rate among operators.
  • TransPennine Express at 8.48% and Avanti West Coast at 8.19% complete the three worst performers, while Transport for Wales at 7.60% and Northern at 7.09% also exceed the average.
  • Great Western Railway recorded a 5.38% cancellation rate—about 18,415 of 342,289 planned services—placing it 16th out of 24 operators.
  • West Midlands Railway ranks as the eighth least reliable at 6.01%, and the operator says it is investing £1 billion, including East Birmingham depot upgrades, to reduce cancellations.
  • Top performers include ScotRail at 1.68%, Lumo at 1.76% and Greater Anglia at 1.82%, with others such as Chiltern, Hull Trains and c2c also below 2%.
