New Polls Show Rising U.S. Skepticism of Israel’s Gaza Campaign and Trump’s Response

Fresh national polls show deep divides across parties, generations over the Gaza war.

Overview

  • Fifty-nine percent of Americans now view the Israeli government unfavorably, up from 51% in early 2024, according to Pew’s Sept. 22–28 survey.
  • Thirty-nine percent say Israel is going too far militarily in Gaza, while 16% call its approach about right and 10% say not far enough, with roughly a third unsure.
  • More Americans disapprove than approve of the U.S. response to the conflict (42% vs. 30%), and 36% say President Donald Trump is favoring Israel too much.
  • Americans are more likely to say the U.S. gives too much military aid to Israel (33%) and not enough humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza (35%).
  • Washington Post polling of U.S. Jews finds sharp internal division: 61% say Israel has committed war crimes, 46% support the Gaza campaign and 48% oppose it.
