New Poll Shows Sharp Fall in UK Support for Net Zero

Research by YouGov/Public First for The Times finds growing scepticism with lower willingness to bear costs.

Overview

  • The share of Britons who say global warming risks are exaggerated has risen by more than 50% in four years, with one in four now holding that view and 16% saying warming is not human-caused.
  • Support for key measures has dropped, with backing for a ban on new petrol and diesel cars down to 30% from 51% in 2021 and limited support for banning gas boilers in new homes.
  • Only 16% say they would pay higher gas bills to speed the switch to electricity, and support has fallen for higher petrol prices and taxes on high-emission foods.
  • Confidence that governments will deliver net zero by 2050 has more than halved to 15%, and fewer voters expect green policies to boost growth or jobs.
  • Focus groups in Watford and the West Midlands show swing voters prioritising everyday concerns and doubting the UK’s influence, as figures such as Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch press to revisit or scrap parts of the net‑zero agenda.
