New Poll Charts Deepening UK Divides Over IsraelGaza and Protest Fatigue

The findings come from nationally representative October surveys by More in Common of around 2,000 adults in Britain.

Overview

  • Nearly half of those who sympathise with either side would consider ending friendships over opposing social media posts, at 43% among Palestine sympathisers and 46% among Israel sympathisers.
  • Forty-four percent say the UK is unsafe for Jewish people and 37% say it is unsafe for Muslims, with concern heightened by incidents such as the Heaton Park synagogue attack.
  • Two-thirds of Britons (67%) believe some IsraelPalestine protests are so disruptive they should not be allowed, reflecting growing protest fatigue after high-profile demonstrations and flashpoints.
  • Three-quarters say they do not feel comfortable discussing the conflict on social media and around three in ten feel uncomfortable talking about it with friends.
  • Sympathy has shifted since 2023, with 14% now leaning toward Israel (down from 16%) and 26% toward Palestine (up from 18%), as More in Common warns of eroding trust and urges action from government and civil society.
