New Moon Sets Stage for Five July Meteor Showers

Observers can plan around moon phases alongside key planetary alignments to catch July’s sequence of meteor showers spanning Alpha Capricornids through early Perseids.

Overview

  • The Alpha Capricornids will streak across the sky from July 3 through July 31, peaking with slow, bright meteors at the end of the month.
  • The Southern Delta Aquarids become active on July 12 and reach their maximum rate on July 31 under the dark conditions of the July 24 new moon.
  • The July Pegasids run from July 4 to 14 and peak on July 10 with up to five meteors per hour, though moonlight will reduce visibility.
  • The Gamma Draconids are forecast to peak on July 28 around 09:00 CEST, offering about five slow meteors per hour during their July 25–31 activity window.
  • Venus will appear in the Hyades on the morning of July 11 and join Jupiter and a slim crescent Moon on July 22, while Saturn becomes increasingly visible in the late-night sky.
