Overview

  • A new moon on July 24 has created exceptionally dark skies across the UK, eliminating lunar glare for optimal meteor visibility.
  • The Met Office predicts clear conditions overnight in England, Wales and Scotland, with minimal cloud cover around peak viewing hours.
  • Perseid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at up to 45 miles per second and are most visible between midnight and 5:30 am.
  • Observers are advised to seek out dark-sky locations away from artificial light and obstructions and to let their eyes adjust for at least 10 minutes.
  • Meteor counts will continue to rise nightly ahead of the shower’s maximum of up to 150 meteors per hour around August 12.
