New Mexico Introduces Digital IDs for Apple and Google Wallets

New Mexico has launched support for digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.
The feature allows residents to use their smartphones or smartwatches to present identification at select TSA checkpoints, businesses, and venues using the NM Verifier app.
Physical IDs are still required for law enforcement and age verification purposes, as digital IDs do not fully replace physical cards.
The rollout aligns New Mexico with states like California, Colorado, and Georgia that support digital IDs on both Apple and Google platforms.
Privacy concerns have been raised by the ACLU regarding potential tracking and accessibility issues for those without smartphones, though Apple and Google include encryption and device-lock protections.
