New Mexico Governor Faces Impeachment Over Gun Control Orders

Republican Representatives Initiate Proceedings, Citing Violation of State and Federal Constitutions

Republican Representatives Stefani Lord and John Block have initiated impeachment proceedings against Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham over her emergency public health orders, which include limitations on carrying firearms in public spaces within the Albuquerque region.
The governor’s orders were a response to a series of gun violence incidents, including the tragic shooting death of an 11-year-old boy.
Gun rights advocates, including Republican state legislators and organizations like the National Rifle Association, have legally challenged the orders and sought intervention from the New Mexico Supreme Court.
A federal judge has allowed the enforcement of the gun provision to continue pending legal proceedings.
The New Mexico legislature, which convened for a 30-day session, might consider additional firearm proposals from the governor aimed at curbing gun violence, including a proposal for a permanent ban on firearms in state parks and playgrounds.
