New Mexican Supreme Court Slashes Perks as Inherited 2026 Food Budget Draws Scrutiny

The court says the prior administration drafted the 565 million peso request under review.

Overview

  • All nine ministers proposed cutting their annual benefits by up to 78.5%, dropping total prestaciones from 3,347,582 to 716,869 pesos and eliminating a 1,059,000 peso food allowance.
  • Perks such as gasoline, phones, vehicles and training would be reclassified as centralized operating expenses, to be granted only upon justified request.
  • The 2026 plan includes 565 million pesos for Alimentos y Utensilios across the judiciary, a 37% increase over this year, with the OAJ’s share rising from 374.1 to 508.3 million pesos.
  • The SCJN’s own food line is 47.2 million pesos for 2026, up 48% from 31.8 million this year, and the court lists 42 food-service technicians earning about 31,000 pesos gross per month.
  • The OAJ says the proposal was inherited and could be modified by the Chamber of Deputies, as President Claudia Sheinbaum urges roughly 15 billion pesos in cuts to the judiciary’s overall budget.
