New M4.0 Quakes in Puno and Tacna Extend Peru’s Weekend Seismic Cluster

IGP reports light shaking with no damage, urging residents to reinforce preparedness.

Overview

  • IGP recorded a magnitude 4.0 event near Juliaca, Puno at 12:21 p.m. local time on Sept. 21 at a depth of 228 km.
  • A second magnitude 4.0 was logged at 10:12 a.m. near Calana, Tacna on Sept. 21 at a depth of 165 km, with only light shaking reported and no damage.
  • On Sept. 20, a magnitude 4.3 in Amazonas occurred 148 km north of Santa María de Nieva at 97 km depth and was felt at intensity II–III.
  • Earlier on Sept. 20, a magnitude 4.0 struck Huancavelica 14 km southwest of Colcabamba at 103 km depth without damage or casualties.
  • The sequence follows two Sept. 19 quakes in Piura of magnitudes 4.1 and 4.2 southwest of Paita that were felt at intensity II and caused no reported damage.
