Overview
- Sherrill disclosed Tuesday that a motor-vehicle registration software malfunction added roughly 6,600 people who indicated they were not U.S. citizens to New Jersey’s voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024.
- A preliminary state review found that about 400 of those erroneously registered individuals cast ballots, and those ballots were spread across parties and counties.
- The error happened when applicants who answered “no” to a citizenship question on a keypad during license or ID applications were nevertheless marked as registered to vote by the automated system.
- In response, Sherrill ordered an independent forensic investigation, directed the removal of the affected registrations, and has started replacing the vendor that runs the Motor Vehicle System.
- Sherrill said she received a July 15 letter from President Trump’s administration alleging up to 35,000 improper registrations, has asked for supporting evidence, and reports New Jersey has not yet received documentation backing that larger figure.
