New Jersey Probe Finds 1,100 More Problematic Voter Registrations

The discovery prompted the state to replace the vendor and introduce daily audits plus clearer registration prompts to stop improper enrollments.

Overview

  • Gov. Mikie Sherrill disclosed Wednesday that her review identified about 1,100 additional problematic records in the MVC automatic registration system, separate from the earlier finding of thousands of noncitizen registrations.
  • About 750 records involved people who answered “no” to an age-eligibility prompt but were still registered; officials say none were underage, many likely pressed the wrong button, and roughly 50 voters will be removed from the rolls.
  • The review also flagged roughly 340 people who were serving sentences for indictable offenses and about 60 who were incarcerated when registered; those names are being sent to county election offices for individual vetting.
  • Sherrill has removed thousands of registrations from the rolls, is replacing the vendor IDEMIA, ordered an outside law firm’s independent probe, and directed the MVC to run automatic daily audits and clearer multilingual prompts at reentry and mobile clinics.
  • IDEMIA disputes that its software glitched and says it followed state specifications while Republicans and the DOJ have pressed for audits and records, raising continued legal and political scrutiny of New Jersey’s automatic registration process.
