New Jersey Man Sentenced to Eight Years for Harassing Black Neighbors

Edward C. Mathews, caught on video in 2021 using racial slurs, pleaded guilty to bias intimidation and drug possession charges.

Edward C. Mathews, a white man from New Jersey, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after a 2021 incident where he was caught on video harassing his Black neighbors with racial slurs.
Mathews pleaded guilty to four counts of bias intimidation and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute.
During a search of Mathews' home, police found numerous psilocin mushrooms, known for their hallucinogenic effect.
Mathews had a pattern of terrorizing his Black neighbors, including stalking, smearing feces on their windows, and damaging their cars.
Mathews, who has been in custody since his arrest, will get credit for the time he's already served and will be eligible for parole in about 16 months.
