New Jersey Court Permanently Bars Bob Menendez From Public Office

Officials say the lifetime ban helps restore confidence in New Jersey government.

Overview

  • Mercer County Superior Court Judge Robert Lougy issued the order at the request of Attorney General Matt Platkin’s office and the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.
  • The ruling declares Menendez “forever disqualified” from any state or local office or position of honor, trust, or profit in New Jersey.
  • Under the order, applying for, campaigning for, or taking steps to seek public office could trigger a fourth-degree contempt-of-court charge.
  • Menendez, 71, was convicted in July 2024 of bribery, extortion, conspiracy, and obstruction for accepting cash, gold bars, and other benefits, including actions that aided Egypt, and he is serving an 11-year sentence.
  • His wife, Nadine Menendez, was also convicted and sentenced to 54 months in prison, and his U.S. Senate seat was filled by Andy Kim following Menendez’s August 2024 resignation.
