New Jersey Attorney General Identifies Suspect and 3 Relatives After Piscataway Police Kill Knife-Wielding Man

Authorities say the suspect’s father called 911 before officers tried Tasers and then opened fire, and a state-led review is underway.

Overview

  • The suspect was identified as Jordan Barnes, 29, and the deceased inside were his mother, Jeanmarie Barnes, 60, and grandparents, Brenda F. Barnes, 84, and Richard A. Barnes, 86, officials said.
  • Police responded to the River Road home around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 5 after a 911 call reporting a person with a knife.
  • After officers saw two unresponsive people through the door, they confronted Barnes, issued commands, deployed Tasers that failed, and Officer John Ward then fired, according to the attorney general’s office.
  • Two knives were recovered near Barnes, and the three relatives were found inside with multiple stab wounds, authorities said.
  • The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the AG’s Office/OPIA are investigating, the case will be presented to a grand jury under state law, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
