New Harvard CAPS–Harris Poll Shows Slide for Trump as More Voters Say Economy Has Worsened

The late-January survey records a two-point drop in overall approval to 45 percent.

Overview

  • A 53 percent majority now says the economy is worse under President Trump than under Joe Biden, according to the Jan. 28–29 online survey of 2,000 registered voters with a margin of error of about ±2 points.
  • Trump’s issue ratings declined across the board, with immigration approval falling to 46 percent from 49 percent, the economy at 43 percent, foreign affairs at 42 percent, and inflation and trade each at 39 percent.
  • Sixty-three percent of respondents attribute the current state of the economy mostly to Trump’s policies rather than to Biden’s tenure.
  • While 51 percent approve of Trump’s handling of the Minneapolis anti-ICE protests, broader enforcement views are skeptical, with 57 percent saying ICE and CBP have gone too far, 55 percent disapproving of city operations, and 86 percent favoring body cameras for federal agents.
  • The White House rejects the negative readings, with a spokesperson saying inflation has cooled, GDP growth is accelerating, and the border is sealed.
