Overview
- A trooper attempted a traffic stop for speeding at about 12:51 a.m. on I-93 northbound near Exit 12.
- The blue 2020 Honda Civic did not stop and was observed driving erratically at speeds reaching 120 mph.
- As the car approached Exit 18 in Canterbury, it lost control on the off-ramp, crossed the northbound on-ramp, went down an embankment, and struck a tree.
- The driver was identified as Benjamin Tapia Gately, 20, of Saugus, Massachusetts, who was ejected and pronounced dead after life-saving efforts at the scene.
- No other occupants were in the vehicle, Canterbury Fire & Rescue assisted, and state police ask anyone with information to contact Sgt. Kenneth McGrath.
