New Exoplanet Discovered Orbiting Barnard's Star, Just 6 Light Years Away

Astronomers confirm the existence of Barnard b, a sub-Earth-mass planet, after five years of observation using ESO’s Very Large Telescope.

  • Astronomers have detected Barnard b, a planet orbiting Barnard’s Star, the closest single star to our solar system at approximately 6 light years away.
  • The discovery was made using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and confirmed with additional data from other instruments.
  • Barnard b is a sub-Earth-mass planet with a minimum mass of 37% that of Earth, making it one of the lowest-mass exoplanets ever found.
  • The planet completes an orbit around Barnard’s Star every 3.15 Earth days but is too close to the star to support liquid water or life as we know it.
  • Researchers also found hints of up to three more potential planets in the system, which require further observation for confirmation.
