New Emerson Poll Shows Four-Way Cluster in California Governor’s Race

With nearly a third of voters undecided, Eric Swalwell’s late entry is splitting Democratic support in a top-two primary that rewards low-plurality contenders.

  • Emerson’s Dec. 1–2 survey finds Gavin Newsom’s job approval at 47% and disapproval at 39%, his highest net of the year at +8.
  • Voters are evenly divided on the impact of a Newsom endorsement, with 33% saying more likely to support, 33% less likely, and 35% no difference.
  • Within party groups, Democrats split between Swalwell (20%) and Porter (17%), Republicans divide between Bianco (33%) and Hilton (30%), and 45% of independents are undecided.
  • Top issues are the economy (34%) and housing affordability (25%), and name recognition remains limited, with Porter at 30% favorable/34% unfavorable and Swalwell at 24% favorable/23% unfavorable; the poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters with a ±3-point credibility interval.
