New Drone Strike Hits Chornomorsk Oil Plant as Odesa Battles Black Sea Contamination

Prosecutors have opened criminal inquiries into attacks on Ukraine’s export infrastructure.

Overview

  • Kernel says a drone struck the Illichivsk Oil and Fat Plant in Chornomorsk overnight, damaging a vegetable oil tank, igniting a large fire, and causing a leak, with damage assessment underway and no injuries reported.
  • Earlier strikes on Pivdennyi ignited containers of flour and vegetable oil, sending product into the Black Sea and prompting a temporary closure of port waters.
  • Authorities installed floating boom barriers, blocked the Pivdennyi port channel with two layers of booms, and deployed specialized vessels to contain and collect surface pollution.
  • Oily residues and dozens of dead or stricken birds were recorded on Odesa’s Delfin and Lanzheron beaches, and Odesa Zoo set up a reception point to clean and rehabilitate affected wildlife.
  • The State Environmental Inspectorate is sampling and documenting damage, and marine ecologists reported the slick stretched roughly 55 kilometers along the coast to the area of Sanzhiika.
