New Drone Sightings Shut Denmark’s Aalborg Airport as Investigators Probe Wider Nordic Incursions

Officials now warn of a capable operator behind the incursions.

Overview

  • Northern Jutland police halted all flights at Aalborg on Wednesday night after more than one drone with lights on was seen, with Eurocontrol setting traffic to zero until 0400 GMT and the co-located military base affected, alongside reports of drones near Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Skrydstrup airfields.
  • Danish national police said the activity mirrors the two to three large drones that closed Copenhagen Airport for nearly four hours on Monday, forcing dozens of diversions and causing delays and cancellations affecting about 20,000 passengers.
  • Copenhagen police described the pilot as a “capable operator” flying from multiple directions with lights switching on and off, and authorities decided against shooting the drones down due to the risk to passengers, aircraft and nearby fuel facilities.
  • Multiagency investigations now involve local police, the armed forces and the intelligence service PET with cross-border coordination, and officials have not attributed responsibility while saying potential Russian involvement cannot be confirmed.
  • Norway briefly closed Oslo Airport after a separate sighting, and police detained two people for flying drones over the restricted Akershus Fortress area in Oslo with no established link to the airport disruptions.
