New Cross Flat Fire Brought Under Control After 14-Hour Overnight Operation

Around 100 firefighters used aerial ladders to quell flames that destroyed the roof, damaging upper floors.

Overview

  • The London Fire Brigade said the Hatcham Park Mews blaze was first reported at 4:27pm Wednesday and was under control by 6:48am Thursday.
  • Fifteen fire engines and about 100 firefighters responded from New Cross, Peckham, Greenwich, Deptford and surrounding stations.
  • The fire destroyed the roof and damaged part of the first floor and most of the second floor, the brigade reported.
  • A number of residents were evacuated to a nearby rest centre and a hotel while crews worked through the night.
  • A large smoke plume led to advice for locals to keep windows and doors closed, and the incident caused significant traffic disruption with people asked to avoid the area.
