New Comet SWAN25B Emerges Bright Near the Sun as Orbit Remains Uncertain

A very short observation arc leaves future visibility and trajectory uncertain pending more astrometry.

Overview

  • First flagged in SOHO/SWAN imagery by amateur Vladimir Bezugly, the comet was posted to the Minor Planet Center’s Possible Comet Confirmation Page on September 12.
  • Early brightness estimates differ, with the MPC listing about magnitude 8.3 and multiple visual reports around magnitude 7.4–7.5.
  • Images show a condensed coma and signs of an ion tail, including a report of a roughly 2° tail from South Australia, consistent with a post‑perihelion outburst.
  • Current geometry places the object at low solar elongation near Virgo, making it a challenging twilight target best placed for Southern Hemisphere observers.
  • Observers are urged to obtain and submit additional astrometry to refine the orbit and improve short‑term brightness and positioning forecasts.
