New Cold Front Hits Mexico as Argentina Issues Storm Alert and Galicia Turns Wet and Windy

Meteorologists warn of hazardous conditions across three regions during the latest frontal outbreak.

Overview

  • On Thursday, Mexico’s national service forecasts widespread showers with pockets of strong to very strong rain and possible hail, including very strong totals in Chiapas and strong storms in Campeche and Quintana Roo.
  • Cold to very cold conditions persist in Mexico’s highlands with heladas in 11 states, minimums down to −10 to −5 °C in mountainous areas of Chihuahua and Durango, and subzero lows in several other ranges.
  • Authorities caution that heavy rain and strong winds could trigger flooding, landslides, rising rivers and wind damage, with rachas of 30–50 km/h expected in Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas and afternoon showers possible in the Valley of Mexico.
  • Argentina’s SMN issues a yellow alert for parts of Buenos Aires province with storms bringing frequent lightning, occasional hail, gusts up to 70 km/h and heavy short‑period rainfall of roughly 30–70 mm.
  • AEMET‑based local forecasts for Galicia call for rain intensifying through the afternoon with southerly gusts near 60–62 km/h across multiple towns, including A Estrada, Meis, Bueu, Tui and O Rosal.
