New Canaan Son, 20, Charged in Mother’s Bludgeoning After 911 Confession

The medical examiner ruled homicide by blunt head injuries as the defendant remains held on $2 million bond pending a Nov. 3 court date.

Overview

  • Police say Sebastian Van Stockum, 20, called 911 saying he killed his mother and was reported yelling “Mama” in nearby woods on Oct. 24.
  • Responding officers found Laura Williams, 55, with severe head trauma and a cracked skull outside the home, with a blood-smeared hammer beside her.
  • Arrest records state Van Stockum told officers, “I did it,” said he was not mentally well, and indicated he tried a knife, a hammer, and his fists.
  • The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was blunt injuries to the head and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
  • Van Stockum appeared in Stamford Superior Court, where a prosecutor called the killing “especially violent,” and he remains jailed on $2 million bond with a Nov. 3 hearing set.
