New Basque-Language Book Warns of Long Decline Risk as Cities Roll Out Euskara Events

The authors call for measures that develop real proficiency beyond recently announced free A2 courses.

Overview

  • The book Esnatu ala hil argues Euskara is unlikely to disappear within a century but could weaken over time without decisive action.
  • Authors Iñaki Iurrebaso and Garikoitz Goikoetxea identify proficiency as the main gap and cite figures showing about 8% speak Basque more easily than Spanish, nearly 70% are monolingual Spanish or French speakers, and roughly 0.5% speak only Basque.
  • Gasteiz will host the second Gasteiz Euskararen Hiria on September 13 with a 14‑hour program of concerts, bertsolaritza, sport and cultural activities across two central squares.
  • Basauri’s Bizi Kirola Euskaraz takes place September 14 at Artunduaga, with 17 local clubs running games in Basque for children aged six and up.
  • Pello Reparaz’s Mitoaroa II drew about 40,000 at Illunbe, and the production adjusted pacing after audience reactions; he says a planned sequel will set parts of the story in 2084.
