Overview

  • The IFAB approved on March 1 a change requiring goalkeepers to release the ball within eight seconds or concede a corner kick
  • Officials visibly count down the final five seconds and pause timing when a keeper is under opponent pressure
  • All 35 referees at the Club World Cup will wear bodycams to capture on-field decisions and promote discipline
  • Teams will access advanced semi-automated offside monitoring and referees must publicly explain VAR interventions
  • From July 1, 2025, these updates along with revised penalty kick handling will be enshrined in the global Laws of the Game
