Overview
- The National Highways Authority of India began three-day trials on May 29 for the 5.1km tunnel, which forms Phase 4 of the Rs 9,000-crore, 29km Dwarka Expressway corridor.
- The tunnel comprises a 3.6km eight-lane section linking Dwarka Expressway to IGI Airport and a 1.5km two-lane spur connecting to NH-48 towards Gurgaon.
- Officials say the new route will relieve pressure on the Delhi–Gurugram Expressway and cut commute times for residents of Gurgaon, Dwarka and Vasant Kunj.
- Advanced safety measures include CCTV surveillance, a dedicated control room, emergency exits and an 80 km/h speed limit on fresh tarmac.
- Interior walls are lined with murals celebrating regional heritage, and only vehicles under 4.5 m are permitted while two- and three-wheelers and flammable loads are barred.
