New 4.8–4.9 Earthquake Shakes Granada, Spain

Overview

• A new main tremor measured about 4.8 by Spain’s IGN and 4.9 by the USGS struck south of Granada on Tuesday and had its epicenter reported near Alhendín and Gójar.
• The quake and its immediate aftershocks caused visible cracks and falling debris, damaged vehicles, and left at least three people with minor injuries including a child taken to hospital.
• Emergency services answered dozens of calls and carried out removals while provincial authorities evacuated hotels, closed public buildings, and restricted access to the Alhambra.
• The event was followed by multiple aftershocks, some above magnitude 4, and is part of a larger sequence that the IGN says has included hundreds of small quakes in the days before Tuesday’s tremor.
