Nevada Regents Approve Three-Year Tuition Hike to Address $46.5 Million Shortfall

The decision responds to the pending expiration of temporary state bridge funding.

Overview

  • The Board of Regents approved the plan in an 8–5 vote, with increases phased in over three academic years starting in fall 2026.
  • At four-year institutions and for upper-division community college courses, rates will rise 3%, 4%, then 5%, totaling about 12% by 2028–29.
  • For community colleges’ lower-division courses, fees will climb 2%, 3%, then 4% over the same period, totaling about 9%.
  • By 2028–29, in-state undergraduates are projected to pay about $1,200 more annually at UNR and UNLV, about $900 more at Nevada State University, and around $400 more at many community colleges.
  • NSHE says the revenue will help close the gap and support roughly $41 million tied to more than 300 staff positions, while students and some regents criticized the plan over affordability and transparency.
