Neugebauer Climbs to Second in World Championship Decathlon as Chaos Thins Field

With the pole vault done and only the javelin and 1500m remaining, Kyle Garland holds a slim lead as Niklas Kaul targets a late push in his best events.

Overview

  • Leo Neugebauer surged with a 56.15m discus, the best of the meet, and cleared 5.10m in the pole vault to sit second on 7269 points, 53 behind leader Kyle Garland (7322) and just ahead of Ayden Owens-Delerme (7238).
  • Norway’s Sander Skotheim was disqualified in the 110m hurdles, Simon Ehammer exited after three failed high-jump attempts, and Damian Warner withdrew with Achilles problems, leaving a depleted field.
  • Niklas Kaul is seventh with 6717 points after a subdued 4.70m pole vault and now looks to capitalize on the javelin, where his 79.05m best eclipses the leaders’ marks, before his strong 1500m.
  • Germany’s 4x100m squads advanced to the finals; the women clocked 41.86 and the men qualified as Jamaica’s men dropped the baton and were eliminated.
  • Sandrina Sprengel finished fifth in the heptathlon with multiple personal bests, and Yemisi Ogunleye placed sixth in the women’s shot put.
